Freedom from tyranny
of the urgent
by: Charles E. Hummel
Most of the time people are always
asking themselves how to manage all the things that they need to do in the day
with so little time. In the book Freedom from Tyranny of the urgent, Charles
Hummel explains how it could be possible to manage all the things that need to
be done in the day and not to life under a call of urgent. One of the things
that is very important to know, is that urgent it does not mean important. Hummel(1997) stated on his book about the different
between the important and the urgent, “Important is gauged by contribution to our
high priority goals. Tasks that are not urgent require initiative and
perseverance. Since frequently there is since pressure for them to be done
today, this week or even these months, these activities must be motivated by
our commitment to their ultimate value” “
Urgent calls for the immediate. Urgent matters come into our life demanding
action.” (p. 27) It means that important things could be plans and can be
done in days or hours or months, but urgent need to be done in the moment, there’s
no time to waste. Most of the time people live under the calls of urgent
because they do not plan what they will do in the day. To make a list of what to do in the day and
even make a list for the whole week, will help to accomplish all the goals on
time and not to be in a hurry of the urgent. According to Hummel it could be possible to
manage all it need to be done in a day or in life but there is some principal that
need to be done for that.
1. To be
wise on how we manage our time, the script says “15 See
then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil” Ephesians
5:15-16 (NKJV). Waste time on things
that are not important, take time on the important things that need to be done.
Jesus was here on earth and on three years He work on His ministry, healing,
releasing people from demos attack, but He did all that because He did no
waster time.
2. Seeking
the Kingdom of God first. When there is a lot to do, but so littler time. The
first things that need to be done and to come to God for direction. Before the
day start it is always good to give God the first hour of the day like that God
will give the direction to follow on the day and accomplish all the goals for
the day. The script says on Matthew 6:33 “33 but
seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall
be added to you” (NKJV).
3. Be redirected by the Holy Spirit.
To seek first for the kingdom of God, will make the Holy Spirit
come and guide all the steps that are need to be done to reach long period
goals or short terms goals. When there is no guidance of the Holy
Spirit, the results is to become slaves
of time, of circumstances. Ending
having no time and falling in the call of the urgent. But the Holy Spirit was
given by God as a companion to guide and give directing in live. The Script
says on Roman 8:14-16 “14 for
as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again
to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba,
Father.” 16 The Spirit Himself bears
witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (NKJV).
Is an everyday life style
for most of the people, to do everything in a urgent call. But to obtain
freedom form the tyranny of urgent, first is very important to know the
different between the urgent and the important. To do a list of thing that
needs to be done in the day or in long terms. That God is the one that need to
have the first hour of our day so His Holy Spirit could be a guide and make us
free from the tyranny of urgent.
As this is learn it is
possible to have time to reach goals and also to have time to just be relaxed
and enjoy the day.
